The Lacandon Jungle is a tropical region in the extreme southeast of Mexico. His enigmatic beauty, the culture of indigenous groups that inhabit it, its great historical and landscape make this place has no comparison and attracts many visitors who visit it once, feelingthe urge to do it several more times.

Let’s take a journey through the jungle from different points of view, starting with the general knowledge of the region.

The Lacandon Forest covers an area of approximately 1.8 million hectares, located mostly in the so-called Mountains of eastern Chiapas, between the municipalities of Las Margaritas, Altamirano, Ocosingo and Palenque and the newlyformed Wonders Tenejapa, and Marques de Comillas Zamora Pico de Gold

Its name originates from a community descended from the Maya who lived on the shore of Lake Miramar and had a ceremonial center on an island called Lacan-Tun ( «boulder» or «rock»), the Spanish called these Indians «those Lacantún, a name that was referred to and finally Lacandon Lacandon, a term that is still used to name theindigenous Mayans from the Yucatan Peninsula and settled in the jungle region of Chiapas for over a century.

Part of the pre-Hispanic history of the Lacandon is described in the numerous archaeological sites that are embedded in the dense forest, most notably its size and splendor Palenque, Tonina Bonampak (painted walls) and Yaxchilan ( «green stone «), located on the left bank of the UsumacintaRiver
La Selva Lacandona es una región tropical localizada en el extremo sureste de México. Su enigmática belleza, la cultura de los grupos indígenas que la habitan, su gran valor histórico y paisajístico hacen que este lugar no tenga comparación como atractivo turístico: quien la visita una vez, siente el deseo imperioso de hacerlo varias veces más.
Hagamos un recorrido por la selva desde diferentespuntos de vista, iniciando por el conocimiento general de la región.
La Selva Lacandona comprende un territorio de aproximadamente 1.8 millones de hectáreas, localizado mayormente en las denominadas Montañas del Oriente de Chiapas, entre los municipios de Las Margaritas, Altamirano, Ocosingo y Palenque y los recientemente formados Maravillas Tenejapa, Marqués de Comillas y Zamora Pico de Oro.
Sunombre se origina de una comunidad indígena descendiente de los mayas que vivía en la orilla del lago Miramar y que tenían un centro ceremonial en una isla llamada Lacan-Tun (“piedra grande” o “peñón”); los españoles llamaron a estos indígenas “los de Lacantún”, denominación que fue derivando a lacandón y finalmente a lacandones, término que se sigue utilizando para nombrar a los indígenas mayasprovenientes de la península de Yucatán y que se asentaron en la región selvática de Chiapas hace más de un siglo.
Parte de la historia prehispánica de la Lacandona está descrita en los numerosos centros arqueológicos que se encuentran inmersos en la espesura selvática, entre los que destacan por su tamaño y esplendor Palenque, Toniná, Bonampak (“Muros pintados”) y Yaxchilán (“Piedras verdes”),situada en el margen izquierdo del río Usumacinta
